Shutter and colours on one channel

Post by mitchino »

I'm trying to create a profile for some ancient Geni Mojo Scan 1 scanners I have. The only use 3 channels, pan channel 2, tilt channel 3, and then there is one colour/static gobo wheel that uses channel 1. I've got the colours working, but the light also has shutter and strobe on channel 1. I can't understand how you could have a colour and make it strobe on one channel? How do I get this to work?

Hello,

In order to do this, you will need to use our online Profile Builder tool (profile.nicolaudiegroup.com), rather than the Wolfmix's in built fixture creator.

This can be done via the following steps:

1) Create the profile.

- Go to the Profile Builder web tool.
- Create your profile using the Pan/Tilt channels and the Colour Wheel channel type.
- Add the required colour presets to the Colour Wheel, then also add your Strobe channel (see demonstration fixture profile attached to this thread).
- If you require a 'Shutter off' preset- I would suggest using a 'Black' colour.

2) Add the profile to your Wolfmix.

- Connect your Wolfmix to your computer.
- Open WTOOLS and go to the Fixtures tab in WTOOLS.
- Search for the desired fixture within the 'Cloud' section of the ‘Computer’ list.
- Right click on the fixture and select ‘Sync’ then ‘Confirm’.
- Patch in the fixture to your project via the 'Cloud' brand.

3) Adjust the Beam Editor settings.

- Go to Settings > DMX Values > Settings (Beam Editor).
- Select your profile.
- Scroll to the 'Strobe' feature.
- Press in the encoder and set the relevant channel number (i.e. channel 3).
- Set the 'DMX Min' AND the 'OFF' value to the LOWEST value of your Strobe preset.
- Set the 'DMX Max' AND the 'ON' value to the HIGHEST value of your Strobe preset.

You should now have a profile that follows the colour functions as usual, then jumps to the Strobe preset once the flash button is pressed.

Kind regards,
Will

Hi That's been very helpful thanks. I've adapted the profile you attached and followed the steps, all seems to be working, however, still got some questions...

The unit now responds to the strobe button, but the strobe effect is always just open white, it won't strobe in any of the colours - maybe that's all the unit can do?

The colour swatches on the wolf mix screen and their corresponding buttons do not match the colours coming out of the unit. Can I edit these so that when I press Red, red comes out of the unit etc etc.

Sorry - still very much a newbie!

Hmm, I would presume that this is a fixture limitation unfortunately. It would make sense that way, since it's only possible to send one value at a time to a specific channel- so it would not be possible to select a colour and activate strobe at the same time, since they are using the same channel.

Yes this is indeed possible and can also be done in the Profile Builder web tool. If you are struggling to figure out Profile Builder yourself, I'd be happy to create the profile on your behalf if you could provide the following information:

- Open an empty Wolfmix project.
- Patch in the desired fixture to address 001.
- Attach the physical fixture to the Wolfmix and set it to the correct Mode and DMX Address.
- On the Wolfmix, go to Setup > DMX Values.
- Find the channel that controls the Colour Wheel of your fixture (if unsure, this will be in the user manual for the fixture).
- Turn the first encoder from 0 - 255 to send a 'Test Value' to that channel.
- Make a note of the VALUE and COLOUR at each change (see example screenshot).

Once this is done, I can create the profile for you with all the correct colour and strobe info.

Kind regards,
Will

Hi values and colours as follows:

0-10 Black/ShutterClosed
11-21 White/Open
22-31 Red Triangle Gobo
32-42 Yellow/White/Green Strip Gobo
43-53 Blue Dot Pattern Gobo
54-63 Green/Blue/Yellow/Red Squares Gobo
64-74 Yellow Circle Gobo
75-85 Green Flower Gobo
86-95 Blue/Pink Circle Gobo
96-106 Open Pink
107-117 Open Blue
118-127 Open Yellow
128-138 Open Dark Blue
139-149 Open Orange
150-159 Open Green
160-170 Open Red
171-207 Rotate Wheel Slow To Fast
208-255 Strobe Slow To Fast

For some reason these values bear no relationship to the values I put in to the profile builder according to the manufacturers instruction manual for the Mojo Scan 1. The manual though has a different colour wheel from the one I've got.

I'm happy to put these values into the profile editor, but what I don't understand is how I can then get the screen buttons on the Wolfmix to show these options, rather than the standard red/yellow/green/blue/white etc

Hello,

Thanks for sending that over! I have just created the profile for you and attached it to this thread. For your reference, it is not possible to have Gobos and Colour in the same channel- so I have created 2 modes for you to try. The first will allow you to use only the Open colours (and the Strobe, if set up as initially described), the second will allow you to use the Gobos, but I have had to set these up to have unique colours (see the image attached in the zip folder for more info on what colour is assigned to each Gobo).

If you want to change the colour options on either the static Colour, or Colour FX screen- you can hold shift + select the colour you want to edit. Now you can manually enter the RGB + WAU values, or set a predefined static colour. Tap the flashing button on the 4x5 button matrix to save any changes, or any other button to discard.

Kind regards,
Will

OK so option 2 works well - though I add to move the colour wheel to channel 1, pan channel 2 and tilt channel 3.

I now have the main colours I want, Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, White etc corresponding with the correct buttons.

However the strobe is not working, even on white. How can I fix that?

I remembered what you said earlier, to go to the Beam Editor settings - strobe working again.

I think that's it - working pretty good for such an ancient fixture.

Thanks for all your help.

Hmmm, one more problem.

Switched off the lights and the Wolfmix, then came back two hours later and switched on again. Only the pan and tilt were working, the colours weren't working and the strobe neither. Had to delete the fixture, reload the profile and then go through the beam settings again.

Not a biggie, as I won't switch anything off for the party I'm hosting, but I wonder why it lost the settings?
