Live edit and Blackout button

Post by Marvin042 »

Hi, I have created some presets including Live Edit settings for some of the fixtures. So far so good - but when selecting any of these presets, the Blackout-button only shuts down all fixtures not having Live Edit settings stored. Is there any way to make the stored Live Edit settings also to respond to the Blackout-Button?

THIS is what Live Edit is doing!
Live Edit OVERRIDES the channels you have set to a certain value with the highest priority - and it stays as long the Live Edit is active. There is no way a "lower priority" value of this channel (Blackout/Dimmer) can now be active. THAT is the purpose of Live Edit.
Take a look at the reference manual (page 10) and look at the DMX priority stack. You see Live Edit as one of the highest priority - overriding all other -lower- priorities when active. Also check Blackout priority.

Thanks - ok, got it. Then I use one - so far empty - preset and set all dim values for all fixtures to 0, including the live-edited fixtures. Just name this preset "Blackout" then and that's it :-).

On the priority chart you displayed, what is the difference between the "DMX In" which shows as a low priority and the "DMX In Force" near the bottom as a High priority? Is there a way for an external device to "Insert", "transmit" or "Input" a "DMX In Force"?

yes, indeed there is a way to "INPUT" DMX data to control/manipulate channels and overwrite their values.
This is where you can attach an external DMX controller with faders to overwrite one or multiple (assigned/selected) channels with the value of the fader. This is what WLINK is giving you (enable the XLR C port as a DMX IN!) and you can have a bit more "dynamic" control as with a static Live Edit.

So much for WLINK (DMX IN) in general. The "regular" DMX IN (at top, low priority) can manipulate all channels not assigned (or being not active) when using their default values only. If you activate DMX IN FORCE (high prilrity) , this gives you full overwriting capabilities of a channel, even if a channel is activated by a (lower) Channel function like from an Effect.

If you enable the higher priority "DMX In Force" option, what changes it thereafter? If a new preset is called after invoking the Force In will it then take back over? In a use case scenario like this what happens?:

Time
(1) 1:00 Midi initiates Preset 1
(2) 1:05 DMX Force IN (includes fixtures that were part of Preset 1
(3) 1:10 Midi initiates Preset 2 (includes many of the same fixtures that were in Preset 1 and the DMX Force IN

Thanks, I'm very excited about this but I want to make sure I understand it before paying for the WLINK upgrade

simply every channel with a FORCE DMX IN priority will stay with THAT value, regardless of a Preset change or not.
Presets are just a "collection" of activities of (lower priority) channel types having certain values. If FORCE DMX IN is overwriting these channels, they will stay with the DMX IN VALUES the fader is giving. FORCED overwriting.
